What trenching involves
An EV charger is a big continuous load on a panel that was never asked for one. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With trenching, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
A diagnosis comes before a scope. Once we know what is happening and why, we lay out the work, and you decide how much of it you want done now.
Where this comes up
Level 2 at home, DC fast and fleet charging for business and municipal sites. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
Previous work is the wild card. Plenty of Illinois homes and shops have circuits somebody extended on a weekend, splices buried in a wall with no box, and breakers upsized to stop a nuisance trip. We find those first, because they decide what is safe to build on.
How we do it
Licensed and insured on every call. No job is too small to do properly, and no shortcut is worth an inspector’s red tag. We would rather do it once.
Why this is worth doing properly
The wire in your wall has a rating, and so does the breaker protecting it. When the two do not match, the breaker stops protecting anything and the wire becomes the weak point. A lot of hidden electrical damage traces back to a mismatch like that, or to a connection that worked loose. Both are avoidable with careful work, which is why we take the time.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
We answer 24/7 and an emergency gets a crew the same day. Planned work typically starts within a few days of the go-ahead, unless a permit or a ComEd appointment has to land first.
A small repair is usually one visit. A service upgrade has several moving parts: our install, the village inspection and ComEd restoring power. We tell you which step you are waiting on at every point, so the date never goes quiet.
Code, permits and inspection
An inspector is checking the things you cannot easily see later: box fill, conductor size, grounding and bonding, clearances at the panel, and whether each circuit has the protection it needs. Passing means a second trained set of eyes agrees the work is safe.
We deal with whichever jurisdiction the job sits in. We pull the permit, we schedule the inspection, and we are there when the inspector walks it. You get the paperwork at the end, which matters when you sell the building or when an insurer asks.
Copper, aluminum and what is in your walls
Aluminum branch wiring went into a lot of houses in the late sixties and early seventies. It is not automatically dangerous, but it expands and contracts more than copper, which loosens terminations over time, and it needs devices and connectors rated for it.
The repair is usually not a full rewire. Proper connectors at every termination, done thoroughly, solves most of it. Anybody quoting you a whole-house rewire on sight has not looked.
What to do before we arrive
Outdoor problem, like a damaged service mast or a line down near the house? Stay well back from it and keep others back too. Do not try to move anything. That one involves ComEd as well as us, and we will coordinate it.
Note what was running when it happened and whether it has happened before. That usually cuts the diagnostic time in half.
Load calculation comes first
An EV charger is a continuous load, which means the code requires the circuit to be sized at 125 percent of its rating. A 48-amp charger therefore needs a 60-amp circuit, and that has to fit inside what the service can already carry alongside the furnace, range, dryer and air conditioning.
We run the calculation before anything gets ordered. Sometimes the answer is that the panel takes it as-is, sometimes it needs a load management device, and sometimes the service genuinely needs upgrading first. You get the real answer rather than the convenient one.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
An electrician picks up. Describe what you are seeing and we will tell you how urgent it is.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Trenching, done on the record
Done to code by a licensed electrician, covered by our insurance, and signed off by the inspector wherever a permit applies.
Trenching questions
Do you handle trenching in Des Plaines?
Yes. Trenching is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Where one is required, yes. Some places want a permit for a single circuit, others only for a service change, and we know to check. The inspection record is yours when we finish.
How soon can you start?
If it is an emergency, today. Planned work usually starts within a few days, sooner when no permit is needed and the parts are on hand.
Are you licensed for this?
Every job is done under Quik Wire Electric’s Illinois electrical contractor license, and the company is insured. We do not hand the work off to anyone outside that license.
What does it cost?
That depends on the scope, and the scope depends on what we find when we open things up. We look first, then put a written number in front of you before anything starts. You decide from there.
