What government office buildings involves
Village buildings run long past the life the original design assumed. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With government office buildings, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
Plenty of calls end with a smaller bill than people braced for. A tripping breaker is often a single bad device, and a dead outlet is often a loose wire two boxes away.
Where this comes up
Municipal buildings, garages, libraries and community centers. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
Ungrounded two-wire circuits are still common, along with three-prong outlets installed on top of them with no ground behind the plate. The outlet looks right. The tester says otherwise, and that changes how the job is planned.
How we do it
One crew handles residential, commercial and municipal work, so the person in your basement has seen harder jobs than yours. Everything goes in to code and passes inspection where one is required.
Why this is worth doing properly
Electrical work is the kind you only see when it goes wrong. A connection that was never tightened properly, a splice with no box around it, a breaker larger than the wire behind it: all of it looks fine for years. Doing it properly means it stays fine, and the inspection is the independent check that the work was done the way it should be.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
Once a job is booked, the work itself usually goes quickly. The waiting, when there is any, comes from permit offices and ComEd scheduling, which is why a service change takes longer to start than a repair does.
Permit turnaround is not the same in every village. Some issue one quickly and others take longer, especially for anything bigger than a circuit. We know to ask, and we factor that wait into the date we give you.
The inspection is the point
An inspection is an independent check that what went behind the drywall matches what was supposed to. Work that passes has been verified by somebody with no stake in the invoice.
That is also why we would rather you hire a licensed contractor than the cheapest number you can find. Unpermitted electrical work is a problem you inherit, and it usually surfaces at the worst moment.
Materials and why they matter
Devices are not all the same. A fifty-cent backstabbed outlet holds the conductor with a spring clip; a commercial-grade one clamps it under a screw plate. The second kind is a couple of dollars more and it is the reason the connection is still tight in fifteen years.
We use commercial-grade devices as standard. It is a small share of the job cost and it is the part most likely to fail if you go cheap on it.
What to do before we arrive
Leave the panel cover on. Flipping a breaker is fine. Taking the dead front off to look inside is not, because the service conductors at the top stay live even with the main off. We will open it when we get there.
Clear a path to the panel and the problem area. Then jot down anything that seems to set it off, like a certain appliance or time of day.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.

Government office buildings, done on the record
The paperwork is part of the work. Permits where required, an inspection at the end, and a licensed, insured electrician in between.
Government office buildings questions
Do you handle government office buildings in Des Plaines?
Yes. Government office buildings is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Where the village or city requires a permit, we pull it and we meet the inspector. You get the documentation when the job closes.
How soon can you start?
Same day for emergencies, any day of the week. For scheduled jobs a few days is typical, though a permit or a special-order part can push that out.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes. Quik Wire Electric holds an Illinois electrical contractor license and carries insurance. Every electrician on the job works under that license.
What does it cost?
Sometimes less than people expect, because if a part does not need replacing we say so. Either way you get a written price after we have seen the job, and it holds unless the scope changes.
