What government building renovations involves
A village facility has one thing a private building does not: a budget cycle and a public record. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With government building renovations, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
We explain the job in plain terms before anything starts: what we are changing, why, and how long the power will be off. If a smaller fix does the job, that is the fix you get.
Where this comes up
Village halls, fire stations, public works. Documented work on a public record. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
A lot of the work in Illinois starts in a house or building that has been added onto more than once. Each addition borrowed power from whatever circuit was closest, and by now nobody knows which breaker feeds what. Sorting that out is part of the job.
How we do it
We work like it is our own house. Drop cloths go down, the power stays off only as long as it has to, and the work is finished to code with the permit closed out where the village requires one.
What we see go wrong
Most of the bad work we find was not done by an electrician. It was a handyman, a previous owner or somebody who watched a video. Backstabbed outlets, undersized conductors, missing grounds, neutrals and grounds bonded in a subpanel, junctions buried inside a wall with no box.
None of that is visible from the living room. It surfaces during a remodel, a home inspection, or the day a breaker stops holding.
What happens when we are done
The work gets tested, the circuits get labeled properly in the panel, and the site gets cleaned up. Labeled panels matter more than people think, because the next person working on that system is reading your labels to decide what is safe to touch.
Where a permit was pulled you get the closed inspection. Where documentation exists, you get it.
The inspection is the point
An inspection is an independent check that what went behind the drywall matches what was supposed to. Work that passes has been verified by somebody with no stake in the invoice.
That is also why we would rather you hire a licensed contractor than the cheapest number you can find. Unpermitted electrical work is a problem you inherit, and it usually surfaces at the worst moment.
Grounding and bonding
Grounding is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a fault clears safely. The ground path has to be continuous and low-impedance from every device back to the service, and the neutral and ground can only be bonded together in one place.
A neutral bonded to ground in a subpanel is one of the most common defects we find. It works right up until it does not, and then it puts current on metal that people touch.
The warning signs people ignore
A tingle from a metal appliance or a faucet. Bulbs that burn out far faster in one fixture than anywhere else. A buzz you only hear at night when the house is quiet. These get filed under strange things about the house. They are faults, and they deserve a look before they become emergencies.
Discoloration matters. A tan or brown tint on an outlet or switch plate is heat damage, even if the device still works.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
Day or night, a call reaches an electrician. We ask a few questions and tell you whether it is urgent.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Licensed, insured, permitted where the village requires it, and inspected when the job closes. That is the whole standard.
Government building renovations questions
Do you handle government building renovations in Des Plaines?
Yes. Government building renovations is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Where one is required, yes. Some places want a permit for a single circuit, others only for a service change, and we know to check. The inspection record is yours when we finish.
How soon can you start?
That depends on what kind of job it is. Something unsafe gets attention the same day. Scheduled work generally starts within a few days, with permits and parts being the usual holdups.
Are you licensed for this?
We are. Quik Wire Electric is a licensed Illinois electrical contractor, fully insured, and nobody works on your property outside that license.
What does it cost?
We price each job from what it actually needs, so we look before we name a number. The price is written down before work begins and only changes if the scope changes, and you hear about that before it happens.
