What commercial electrical troubleshooting involves
Commercial jobs live or die on coordination, not on wire. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With commercial electrical troubleshooting, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
It starts with a look at the panel and the circuits involved. From there we tell you what has to be done, what can wait and what was never a problem at all.
Where this comes up
Build-outs, tenant work, lighting and three-phase power for buildings that cannot go dark. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
Older buildings in this part of Illinois were wired to a different standard. Aluminum branch circuits, knob-and-tube in the walls, panels that were full the day they were installed. Those turn up constantly and they change the job.
How we do it
The electrician who quotes the job comes from the same crew that does it. We work to the current code, test every circuit before we leave and label the panel so the next person can read it.
Why this is worth doing properly
Electrical work is the kind you only see when it goes wrong. A connection that was never tightened properly, a splice with no box around it, a breaker larger than the wire behind it: all of it looks fine for years. Doing it properly means it stays fine, and the inspection is the independent check that the work was done the way it should be.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
Emergency calls get same-day attention. Scheduled work usually starts within a few days, though a job needing a permit or a utility disconnect runs on the village's calendar and ComEd's, not purely on ours.
We will tell you at the quote which parts we control and which parts we do not. A service upgrade waiting on a utility appointment is a different timeline from a panel swap we can do tomorrow.
Code, permits and inspection
Generators and transfer switches draw extra attention from inspectors, because a bad install can push power back into the utility lines. Expect a permit and an inspection on those even in places that are relaxed about smaller work, and expect us to handle both.
We deal with whichever jurisdiction the job sits in. We pull the permit, we schedule the inspection, and we are there when the inspector walks it. You get the paperwork at the end, which matters when you sell the building or when an insurer asks.
Grounding and bonding
Grounding is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a fault clears safely. The ground path has to be continuous and low-impedance from every device back to the service, and the neutral and ground can only be bonded together in one place.
A neutral bonded to ground in a subpanel is one of the most common defects we find. It works right up until it does not, and then it puts current on metal that people touch.
What to do before we arrive
If the panel itself is hot, buzzing or smells, do not touch it at all. Shut off the main only if you can reach it without leaning on the box. Otherwise keep clear and tell us that when you call.
Think back to whether this has happened before and what changed recently, like a new appliance or some renovation work. That history narrows things down fast.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
You describe the symptom to an electrician who has seen it before. Urgent or not, you know before you hang up.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Commercial electrical troubleshooting, done on the record
Nothing off the books. If the village needs a permit, it gets filed, and the job is not finished until it passes inspection.
Commercial electrical troubleshooting questions
Do you handle commercial electrical troubleshooting in Des Plaines?
Yes. Commercial electrical troubleshooting is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Permitted work is inspected work, and we treat both as part of the job. You do not have to call the village yourself. We do, and you get the paperwork afterward.
How soon can you start?
Emergencies get same-day attention. Scheduled work usually starts within a few days, depending on parts and on whether a permit has to clear first.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes, with an Illinois electrical contractor license and insurance. That covers every job we take, from a single outlet to municipal work.
What does it cost?
We do not give a price over the phone for work we have not seen, because a number like that is a guess. Once we have looked, you get a written price, and that is the price unless the job itself changes.
