What code compliance upgrades involves
A village facility has one thing a private building does not: a budget cycle and a public record. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With code compliance upgrades, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
A diagnosis comes before a scope. Once we know what is happening and why, we lay out the work, and you decide how much of it you want done now.
Where this comes up
Village halls, fire stations, public works. Documented work on a public record. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
Commercial spaces change hands and change uses. A storefront becomes an auto shop, an office becomes a gym, and the wiring stays what the first tenant needed. When the new equipment shows up, the old circuits are usually the first thing that has to change.
How we do it
We protect the floors, keep the mess contained and haul out what we remove. The work itself goes in to code, and where a permit applies, it gets pulled and inspected.
Why this is worth doing properly
Homeowners who do their own electrical work are often careful and still miss things, because the code covers details nobody would guess: box fill, conductor sizing, which circuits need arc-fault or ground-fault protection. That knowledge is why the license exists. When a licensed electrician does the work and an inspector checks it, those details are covered.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
Same-day for emergencies, any day of the week. For scheduled work, plan on a few days of lead time, longer only when a permit has to be issued or ComEd has to cut and restore power.
The quote comes with the honest version of the timeline: how long the work itself takes, plus how long we expect to wait on a permit or an inspection. Those are two separate numbers and we give you both.
The inspection is the point
An inspection is an independent check that what went behind the drywall matches what was supposed to. Work that passes has been verified by somebody with no stake in the invoice.
That is also why we would rather you hire a licensed contractor than the cheapest number you can find. Unpermitted electrical work is a problem you inherit, and it usually surfaces at the worst moment.
Grounding and bonding
Grounding is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a fault clears safely. The ground path has to be continuous and low-impedance from every device back to the service, and the neutral and ground can only be bonded together in one place.
A neutral bonded to ground in a subpanel is one of the most common defects we find. It works right up until it does not, and then it puts current on metal that people touch.
When to stop and call
When something electrical smells hot or looks burnt, the safest thing you can do is stop using it and call. Do not open the panel to investigate. Tell us what you saw and we will tell you how urgent it is.
A GFCI outlet that trips the instant you press reset is telling you something specific: there is a ground fault on that line right now. Do not bypass it or replace it with a regular outlet. Unplug everything downstream and call us.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
An electrician picks up. Describe what you are seeing and we will tell you how urgent it is.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Code compliance upgrades, done on the record
On the record means a licensed electrician, real insurance, a permit when the village calls for one, and an inspector’s sign-off.
Code compliance upgrades questions
Do you handle code compliance upgrades in Des Plaines?
Yes. Code compliance upgrades is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Yes. Permit requirements change from one village to the next, so we check before we start, pull what is needed and stay through the inspection.
How soon can you start?
When you call, we tell you where you fall. Emergencies are same-day. Most scheduled jobs start within a few days, and if a permit or parts will slow things down, you hear that up front.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes. You are hiring a licensed Illinois electrical contractor with insurance in place, so if something goes wrong, there is a company accountable for it.
What does it cost?
That depends on the scope, and the scope depends on what we find when we open things up. We look first, then put a written number in front of you before anything starts. You decide from there.
