What electrical safety inspections involves
The wiring in an older Illinois house was never sized for how people live now. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With electrical safety inspections, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
Honest answer first. If what you have is fine, we say it is fine. If it needs work, we tell you how much and why, with the urgent parts separated from the ones that can wait.
Where this comes up
Panels, rewires, outlets, lighting and the circuits behind everything in a house. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
It comes up most during a remodel. The walls are open, the old wiring is right there, and it is the cheapest moment the building will ever give you to fix what is behind them. Once the drywall is back, the same repair costs more.
How we do it
One crew handles residential, commercial and municipal work, so the person in your basement has seen harder jobs than yours. Everything goes in to code and passes inspection where one is required.
Why this is worth doing properly
Power that seems to work is a low bar. A circuit can carry current for years while a connection inside it slowly overheats, and nothing in the room gives it away. The real test is whether the work meets code and was installed by someone willing to put a license behind it. That is the standard we hold every job to, small ones included.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
Once a job is booked, the work itself usually goes quickly. The waiting, when there is any, comes from permit offices and ComEd scheduling, which is why a service change takes longer to start than a repair does.
If you are coordinating with other trades, tell us early. Rough-in has to happen before insulation and drywall, and the inspection has to happen before the walls close. We fit into that sequence rather than holding it up.
What the permit actually buys you
A permit puts the work on the public record for the address. When the building changes hands, that record is evidence the electrical was done and checked. Without it, a buyer's inspector treats everything they find as suspect.
It also means the work was sized and installed to the code edition in force, not to whatever was normal when the building went up.
Grounding and bonding
Grounding is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a fault clears safely. The ground path has to be continuous and low-impedance from every device back to the service, and the neutral and ground can only be bonded together in one place.
A neutral bonded to ground in a subpanel is one of the most common defects we find. It works right up until it does not, and then it puts current on metal that people touch.
The warning signs people ignore
A lot of serious electrical calls start with something small that was easy to live with. A dimmer that runs hot, a cord pinched behind furniture for years, a GFCI that trips and gets reset without anyone asking why. If something behaves oddly more than once, it has a cause.
Flicker counts. If a light flickers and the bulb is fine, something in that circuit is making and breaking contact, and that gets worse with time.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.

Electrical safety inspections, done on the record
The standard does not change with the size of the job. Every job is licensed and insured, and inspected wherever the village requires a permit.
Electrical safety inspections questions
Do you handle electrical safety inspections in Des Plaines?
Yes. Electrical safety inspections is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Permitted work is inspected work, and we treat both as part of the job. You do not have to call the village yourself. We do, and you get the paperwork afterward.
How soon can you start?
Scheduled work usually starts within a few days, slower only if a permit or a part is holding it up. Emergencies get seen the same day.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes. Quik Wire Electric holds an Illinois electrical contractor license and carries insurance. Every electrician on the job works under that license.
What does it cost?
It depends on the job, and we would rather be right with a number than fast with one. After a look, you get a written price. If something we open up changes the scope, we stop and talk to you before going further.
