What backup power systems involves
The wiring in an older Illinois house was never sized for how people live now. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With backup power systems, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
Plenty of calls end with a smaller bill than people braced for. A tripping breaker is often a single bad device, and a dead outlet is often a loose wire two boxes away.
Where this comes up
Panels, rewires, outlets, lighting and the circuits behind everything in a house. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
Insulation is the quiet problem. Cloth-wrapped conductors from decades ago go brittle inside the box, and they crack the moment somebody moves them to swap a switch. A small job becomes a careful one, so we check before we promise a time.
How we do it
Straight to the point: we find the problem, fix it to code and leave the space as clean as we found it. Anything that needs a permit gets one, and gets inspected.
Why it usually cannot wait
Electrical problems do not stay the same size. A loose connection heats up, the heat oxidizes the metal, the oxidized metal raises the resistance, and the resistance makes more heat. That loop runs in one direction only and it ends at a scorched box.
If something is tripping, buzzing, warm to the touch or smells like hot plastic, that is the system telling you where the problem is while it is still cheap to fix.
How we quote it
Phone quotes in this trade usually come in low and climb once someone opens the wall. We would rather spend the time up front, find what is behind the drywall and give you one number that holds.
In writing and itemized against the scope we both agreed on. That way, if the scope changes, it is obvious what changed and why, and nothing moves until you have said yes.
What the permit actually buys you
A permit puts the work on the public record for the address. When the building changes hands, that record is evidence the electrical was done and checked. Without it, a buyer's inspector treats everything they find as suspect.
It also means the work was sized and installed to the code edition in force, not to whatever was normal when the building went up.
Grounding and bonding
Grounding is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a fault clears safely. The ground path has to be continuous and low-impedance from every device back to the service, and the neutral and ground can only be bonded together in one place.
A neutral bonded to ground in a subpanel is one of the most common defects we find. It works right up until it does not, and then it puts current on metal that people touch.
The warning signs people ignore
A breaker you reset and forget about. A switch that crackles when you flip it. A light that flickers only when the dryer runs. People live with these for months because nothing seems broken yet. They are early warnings, and early is the cheap time to fix them.
Small signs add up. Two or three minor quirks on the same circuit usually share one cause, and that cause is cheaper to fix early.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.

Backup power systems, done on the record
Every job goes on the record. A permit filed where the village asks for one, an inspection passed, and a licensed, insured electrician doing the work.
Backup power systems questions
Do you handle backup power systems in Des Plaines?
Yes. Backup power systems is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Where the village or city requires a permit, we pull it and we meet the inspector. You get the documentation when the job closes.
How soon can you start?
Sooner than most people expect. A safety issue gets someone out the same day. Planned work typically starts in a few days, depending on parts and any permit.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes. Quik Wire Electric holds an Illinois electrical contractor license and carries insurance. Every electrician on the job works under that license.
What does it cost?
It varies too much by job to quote blind. A loose connection and a panel change are different jobs entirely. We come out, find the actual problem, and give you a firm written price for fixing it. No work starts until you agree to it.
