Belvidere electrical panel upgrades
A panel upgrade is a capacity decision before it is a parts list. We run the load calculation on your own house, tell you whether a hundred amps or two hundred is the honest answer, and handle the ComEd coordination and the city inspection that come with a service change.
- Licensed
Illinois electrical contractor license. The work passes inspection.
- Insured
Full coverage on every job, residential through municipal.
- 24/7
No power, burning smell, breaker that will not hold. We answer.
- Permits pulled
If a permit is required, we file it and handle the inspection.

What forces a panel change
Nobody replaces a panel for fun. The trigger is a specific job that will not fit: a charger in the garage, a heat pump, an induction range, a shop circuit, a hot tub. The load calculation comes back over what the service can carry, and the panel moves to the front of the list.
The other trigger is the panel itself. A full bus with no spare space, two circuits crowded onto one breaker, rust in the bottom of the cabinet. Those are reasons on their own, and we will say so instead of waiting for you to ask.
Picking an amperage from the real load
Two hundred amps is the usual answer and it is not automatically yours. We run the calculation on your house: square footage, heating type, the large appliances, what is going in next. A place with gas heat, a gas range and no charger plans is served fine by a clean hundred-amp panel.
What usually tips it is future load. If a charger and a second air handler are two years out, doing the larger service once costs less than doing it twice. We put both numbers in front of you and you pick. We do not default to the bigger one.
Three parties, one date
Swapping a panel behind an existing service is our schedule alone. Changing the service is not. ComEd has to pull power at the meter and put it back, and the city has to look at the work before that reconnect happens. Two of the three calendars are not ours.
So you get a committed date and a window we cannot shorten. We book the utility work and the inspection in the right order, tell you which day the house is dark, and we do not open up a service until both slots are confirmed.
Overhead against underground
How power reaches the building decides a lot of the work. An overhead drop means a mast, a weatherhead and new service conductors. Underground service in the newer subdivisions means locates, a trench, conduit to the utility's spec, and a backfill nobody gets to skip. Neither is harder. They run on different days.
The day the power is off
Plan on most of a day without power for a straight panel replacement, longer if the service changes with it. Keep the refrigerator and freezer shut. If somebody at the address runs medical equipment or has a deadline they cannot move, say so at the quote and we schedule around it.
Circuits come back one at a time and get labeled as they land. That is the part that takes the hours. A panel wired quickly is a panel somebody has to trace later.
When a subpanel is the honest answer
Not every capacity complaint is a service problem. If the main is sound and you are short on spaces rather than amps, a subpanel in the garage or the basement is the cleaner fix: one feeder off the main, room for the new circuits, the existing equipment left where it is.
It carries its own rules. Neutral and ground separate on the subpanel side, the feeder sized for what it will really carry, the cabinet left accessible. Done right it buys years. Done casually it becomes the defect the next electrician writes up.
What does not go back in
A panel change is the one time every connection in the house sits in front of us. Splices buried in the cabinet, undersized neutrals, breakers not listed for the panel they are clipped into, a feeder entering with no bushing on it. All of that comes out.
Breakers are matched to the panel we install, never salvaged off the old one to save a trip. Lug torque, conductor sizing, fastening, bonding. Those four are the difference between a panel that passes and a panel nobody has to think about again.
The grounding gets rebuilt too
Older services out here often have a single rod and a water bond that was cut the day somebody ran plastic pipe. A panel upgrade is when that gets corrected, because the grounding electrode system is what lets a fault clear instead of energizing something metal. We verify what is present, add what is required, bond the piping, and leave neutral and ground tied together in exactly one place.
Remodeled houses and the panel nobody touched
A lot of houses around Belvidere have been remodeled at least once, and the panel is usually what the remodel skipped. The finished basement, the bumped-out kitchen, the garage with a shop in it. Each added load, and each took whatever space was left.
So we open the cover and count what is really on each breaker before quoting a size. More circuits than spaces is a common find, and it tells you the capacity question was answered by crowding rather than by arithmetic.
What you hold afterward
A directory that matches the house, because every circuit was identified while it was loose. The permit closed and the inspection on record with the city. Photographs of the work before the cover went on. The old equipment gone with us.
Anything wrong and outside the quoted scope goes on a written list, with a note on whether it matters now or can wait. You decide what happens to it. It does not appear on the invoice as a surprise.
The size of the panel is arithmetic before it is an opinion.

How we run electrical panel upgrades at a Belvidere address
- Step 1
Count
We open the panel, inventory every circuit on it, and write down the loads that are already there.
- Step 2
Calculate
The load calculation decides the amperage. You see the arithmetic and the written number before anything is ordered.
- Step 3
Schedule
We book the ComEd disconnect and the city inspection before anything is opened up, and tell you which day the power is off.
- Step 4
Swap
Old cabinet out, new one in, every circuit reconnected and identified as it lands.
- Step 5
Ground
Electrode system verified, piping bonded, neutral and ground tied in one place only.
- Step 6
Close
Inspection signed, directory filled in, photographs and paperwork handed over.

The calculation stays with the house
A panel upgrade is easy to sell and hard to check once the cover goes back on, so we leave you the calculation, the labeled directory and the closed permit. That is how you verify the work without taking anyone's word for it.
Residential electrical panel upgrades in Belvidere: questions we get
Do I need two hundred amps or is one hundred enough?
That comes out of a load calculation on your own house: heating type, square footage, the large appliances and whatever is going in next. Plenty of houses with gas heat are fine on a clean hundred-amp service. If a charger or electric heat is coming, the larger service usually costs less done once.
How long will the power be off?
Most of a working day for a panel replacement behind an existing service. A full service change runs longer, because ComEd has to disconnect and reconnect at the meter and the city has to inspect in between. We give you the date and the window before we start.
Does a panel upgrade need a permit in Belvidere?
Yes. A service or panel change is permitted work, and we file it and meet the inspector. The utility disconnect and reconnect get coordinated with the inspection so the sequence is right, and the closed permit is yours when the job is done.
Can you add a subpanel instead?
Often, and sometimes it is the better answer. If the main service is sound and the real problem is a shortage of spaces, a subpanel gives you room for new circuits without touching the service. We tell you which one your panel actually needs.
Will my old breakers fit the new panel?
No, and they should not. Breakers are listed for a specific enclosure, so the new panel gets breakers matched to it. Carrying old breakers across is a defect an inspector catches and a connection that can run hot at the bus.
The rest of what we do in Belvidere
Same crew, same license, same Belvidere addresses.
- Circuit breaker replacementWhere the breaker turns out to be the symptom and the cabinet is the problem.
- GFCI installationNew protected circuits have to land somewhere, so the panel decides the order.
- Knob-and-tube wiring replacementA rewire adds circuits, and a full bus is what stops it part way through.
- Residential EV charger installationThe charger is usually what exposes how much service the house actually has.
- Residential electrical panel upgrades everywhere we workThe same electrical panel upgrades across Des Plaines and 24 Illinois counties.
