Generator critical power systems
A generator is only worth what it does in the first ten seconds of an outage. Quik Wire Electric handles critical power systems across Des Plaines and 24 Illinois counties. Licensed, insured, permitted where it needs to be.
- Licensed
Illinois electrical contractor license. The work passes inspection.
- Insured
Full coverage on every job, residential through municipal.
- 24/7
No power, burning smell, breaker that will not hold. We answer.
- Permits pulled
Required permits get filed by us. We are there when the inspector comes.

What critical power systems involves
A generator is only worth what it does in the first ten seconds of an outage. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With critical power systems, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
We explain the job in plain terms before anything starts: what we are changing, why, and how long the power will be off. If a smaller fix does the job, that is the fix you get.
Where this comes up
Standby generators, automatic transfer switches and emergency power systems. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
A lot of the work in Illinois starts in a house or building that has been added onto more than once. Each addition borrowed power from whatever circuit was closest, and by now nobody knows which breaker feeds what. Sorting that out is part of the job.
How we do it
Licensed and insured on every call. No job is too small to do properly, and no shortcut is worth an inspector’s red tag. We would rather do it once.
Why it usually cannot wait
Electrical problems do not stay the same size. A loose connection heats up, the heat oxidizes the metal, the oxidized metal raises the resistance, and the resistance makes more heat. That loop runs in one direction only and it ends at a scorched box.
If something is tripping, buzzing, warm to the touch or smells like hot plastic, that is the system telling you where the problem is while it is still cheap to fix.
How we quote it
Our quote is built from what we saw, never from a price sheet. If the panel has room and the wiring is sound, the number reflects that. If we found problems, you see them listed and you decide what gets done now.
We quote from what we have actually seen on site. You get it in writing with each item spelled out, and the final bill lines up with it.
What the permit actually buys you
A permit puts the work on the public record for the address. When the building changes hands, that record is evidence the electrical was done and checked. Without it, a buyer's inspector treats everything they find as suspect.
It also means the work was sized and installed to the code edition in force, not to whatever was normal when the building went up.
Copper, aluminum and what is in your walls
Aluminum branch wiring went into a lot of houses in the late sixties and early seventies. It is not automatically dangerous, but it expands and contracts more than copper, which loosens terminations over time, and it needs devices and connectors rated for it.
The repair is usually not a full rewire. Proper connectors at every termination, done thoroughly, solves most of it. Anybody quoting you a whole-house rewire on sight has not looked.
The warning signs people ignore
Sparks get noticed. The warnings that get missed are subtler: lights that brighten when something else turns on, a GFCI that will not reset after rain, a smell you cannot place that seems to come from a wall. Each one is a problem that is still small.
Warm is a warning. A switch, outlet or breaker should never feel hot, and heat at a device means current is fighting a bad connection.
The transfer switch is the system
People buy a generator and think of the engine as the product. The part that decides whether backup power actually works is the transfer switch, because it is what keeps generator power from backfeeding onto the utility line where it can kill a lineman.
Automatic switches sense the outage and start the unit without anybody being home. Manual switches cost less and need somebody present. Which one is right depends on what you are protecting.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
No call center. The person on the phone knows electrical work and can tell you if it needs someone today.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Critical power systems, done on the record
Done to code by a licensed electrician, covered by our insurance, and signed off by the inspector wherever a permit applies.
Critical power systems questions
Do you handle critical power systems in Des Plaines?
Yes. Critical power systems is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Yes. Skipping a required permit saves nobody anything once a buyer or an insurer asks for it. We file it, meet the inspector and give you the records.
How soon can you start?
Urgent problems, same day. Everything else, usually within a few days of your call. If the village needs a permit before we start, the permit sets the date.
Are you licensed for this?
Every job is done under Quik Wire Electric’s Illinois electrical contractor license, and the company is insured. We do not hand the work off to anyone outside that license.
What does it cost?
That depends on the scope, and the scope depends on what we find when we open things up. We look first, then put a written number in front of you before anything starts. You decide from there.
