What feeder installation involves
The service is where the building meets the grid. Everything else is downstream. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With feeder installation, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
Plenty of calls end with a smaller bill than people braced for. A tripping breaker is often a single bad device, and a dead outlet is often a loose wire two boxes away.
Where this comes up
Services, switchgear, transformers and the distribution behind the meter. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
It comes up most during a remodel. The walls are open, the old wiring is right there, and it is the cheapest moment the building will ever give you to fix what is behind them. Once the drywall is back, the same repair costs more.
How we do it
Straight to the point: we find the problem, fix it to code and leave the space as clean as we found it. Anything that needs a permit gets one, and gets inspected.
What we see go wrong
Most of the bad work we find was not done by an electrician. It was a handyman, a previous owner or somebody who watched a video. Backstabbed outlets, undersized conductors, missing grounds, neutrals and grounds bonded in a subpanel, junctions buried inside a wall with no box.
None of that is visible from the living room. It surfaces during a remodel, a home inspection, or the day a breaker stops holding.
What happens when we are done
You will not find offcuts in the attic or a panel cover left leaning against the wall. When we finish, the circuits are tested and labeled in the panel and the space is clean. If you have questions about anything we did, ask before we pull away.
Where a permit was pulled you get the closed inspection. Where documentation exists, you get it.
Code, permits and inspection
Most permitted jobs have two inspections. The rough-in is checked with the walls open, before insulation and drywall. The final happens once devices are in and the power is on. Missing the rough-in means opening finished walls later, so we schedule around it from the start.
We deal with whichever jurisdiction the job sits in. We pull the permit, we schedule the inspection, and we are there when the inspector walks it. You get the paperwork at the end, which matters when you sell the building or when an insurer asks.
Copper, aluminum and what is in your walls
Aluminum branch wiring went into a lot of houses in the late sixties and early seventies. It is not automatically dangerous, but it expands and contracts more than copper, which loosens terminations over time, and it needs devices and connectors rated for it.
The repair is usually not a full rewire. Proper connectors at every termination, done thoroughly, solves most of it. Anybody quoting you a whole-house rewire on sight has not looked.
The warning signs people ignore
If you have started unplugging one thing to run another, the circuit is telling you it is overloaded. Same if a breaker trips in one season and never in the other. People work around these for years. We would rather see them early, while the fix is still a small one.
Breakers that trip once in a while are not being fussy. Each trip is the breaker catching a real problem before the wire does.
Service size is a ceiling on everything
The service is the limit every other circuit lives under. A 100-amp service was generous when houses had one air conditioner and a gas range. Add electric cooking, a heat pump, a car charger and a finished basement and it stops being enough.
Upgrading means coordinating with ComEd, replacing the meter socket and mast, and sizing the new panel for what the building will need in ten years rather than exactly what it needs today.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.

- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.

Feeder installation, done on the record
Nothing off the books. If the village needs a permit, it gets filed, and the job is not finished until it passes inspection.
Feeder installation questions
Do you handle feeder installation in Des Plaines?
Yes. Feeder installation is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Yes. We pull the permit under our license, meet the inspector on site and hand you the closed-out documentation when the job is done.
How soon can you start?
Call with no power or a burning smell and we come the same day. Other work is usually on the calendar within a few days, depending on the permit and parts.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes, licensed and insured on every call. The company holds an Illinois electrical contractor license, and the electricians who show up work under it.
What does it cost?
Sometimes less than people expect, because if a part does not need replacing we say so. Either way you get a written price after we have seen the job, and it holds unless the scope changes.
