What automatic transfer switches involves
A building owner wants the same answer every time. Is it safe, and when is it done. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With automatic transfer switches, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
We explain the job in plain terms before anything starts: what we are changing, why, and how long the power will be off. If a smaller fix does the job, that is the fix you get.
Where this comes up
Build-outs, tenant work, lighting and three-phase power for buildings that cannot go dark. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
A home sale is often when this surfaces. An inspector flags aluminum branch wiring, a fuse box or a panel with doubled-up breakers, and suddenly there is a deadline. We can tell you which items are urgent and which are only noted.
How we do it
We work like it is our own house. Drop cloths go down, the power stays off only as long as it has to, and the work is finished to code with the permit closed out where the village requires one.
Why this is worth doing properly
Homeowners who do their own electrical work are often careful and still miss things, because the code covers details nobody would guess: box fill, conductor sizing, which circuits need arc-fault or ground-fault protection. That knowledge is why the license exists. When a licensed electrician does the work and an inspector checks it, those details are covered.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
We answer 24/7 and an emergency gets a crew the same day. Planned work typically starts within a few days of the go-ahead, unless a permit or a ComEd appointment has to land first.
Some dates are ours to set and some belong to somebody else. The install day is ours. The village inspection and any ComEd disconnect are not, so we book those first and build our part of the schedule around them.
The inspection is the point
An inspection is an independent check that what went behind the drywall matches what was supposed to. Work that passes has been verified by somebody with no stake in the invoice.
That is also why we would rather you hire a licensed contractor than the cheapest number you can find. Unpermitted electrical work is a problem you inherit, and it usually surfaces at the worst moment.
Grounding and bonding
Grounding is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a fault clears safely. The ground path has to be continuous and low-impedance from every device back to the service, and the neutral and ground can only be bonded together in one place.
A neutral bonded to ground in a subpanel is one of the most common defects we find. It works right up until it does not, and then it puts current on metal that people touch.
What to do before we arrive
Outdoor problem, like a damaged service mast or a line down near the house? Stay well back from it and keep others back too. Do not try to move anything. That one involves ComEd as well as us, and we will coordinate it.
Keep track of patterns. Does it happen in the morning, in the rain, when the microwave runs? Patterns point us straight at the fault.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
Day or night, a call reaches an electrician. We ask a few questions and tell you whether it is urgent.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Automatic transfer switches, done on the record
Licensed and insured on every call. Where a permit applies it is filed, and the inspection closes the job.
Automatic transfer switches questions
Do you handle automatic transfer switches in Des Plaines?
Yes. Automatic transfer switches is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Yes, whenever the job calls for it. We file the permit with the village or city, schedule the inspection and are there when the inspector arrives. The paperwork comes to you at the end.
How soon can you start?
Fast. Emergencies are handled the same day, around the clock. Planned jobs typically begin within a few days unless a permit has to clear or a part has to arrive.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes. You are hiring a licensed Illinois electrical contractor with insurance in place, so if something goes wrong, there is a company accountable for it.
What does it cost?
Tell us what is going on and we can tell you what kind of job it probably is. The firm number comes after we have seen it, written and itemized, and it stays put unless the work changes.
