What electrical service replacement involves
The service is where the building meets the grid. Everything else is downstream. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With electrical service replacement, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
We tell you what we find before we tell you what it costs. If the scope is smaller than you expected, it gets smaller. That happens more often than people assume.
Where this comes up
Services, switchgear, transformers and the distribution behind the meter. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
New load on old wiring is the most common version. A heat pump or a charger for the car goes in, the circuits that were fine until then start complaining, and the real question becomes whether the existing service can carry it at all.
How we do it
We work like it is our own house. Drop cloths go down, the power stays off only as long as it has to, and the work is finished to code with the permit closed out where the village requires one.
Why it usually cannot wait
Electrical problems do not stay the same size. A loose connection heats up, the heat oxidizes the metal, the oxidized metal raises the resistance, and the resistance makes more heat. That loop runs in one direction only and it ends at a scorched box.
If something is tripping, buzzing, warm to the touch or smells like hot plastic, that is the system telling you where the problem is while it is still cheap to fix.
How we quote it
We price after an electrician has had the panel cover off and traced the circuits involved. It takes a little longer than a number over the phone, and it means the price you approve is the price on the invoice unless the scope changes.
No lump sums. Every quote is broken out so you can see where the money goes, and it is tied to a defined scope. When the scope holds, the price holds.
What the permit actually buys you
A permit puts the work on the public record for the address. When the building changes hands, that record is evidence the electrical was done and checked. Without it, a buyer's inspector treats everything they find as suspect.
It also means the work was sized and installed to the code edition in force, not to whatever was normal when the building went up.
Copper, aluminum and what is in your walls
Aluminum branch wiring went into a lot of houses in the late sixties and early seventies. It is not automatically dangerous, but it expands and contracts more than copper, which loosens terminations over time, and it needs devices and connectors rated for it.
The repair is usually not a full rewire. Proper connectors at every termination, done thoroughly, solves most of it. Anybody quoting you a whole-house rewire on sight has not looked.
When to stop and call
Water near anything electrical is a stop-and-call situation: a wet panel, a flooded basement with outlets near the floor, or a fixture dripping after a leak upstairs. Keep clear of it and call us before anyone resets anything.
If you get even a mild shock from a faucet, an appliance or a light switch, stop using it and call. A tingle means current is going somewhere it should not, and the ground path that was supposed to carry it is not doing its job.
Service size is a ceiling on everything
The service is the limit every other circuit lives under. A 100-amp service was generous when houses had one air conditioner and a gas range. Add electric cooking, a heat pump, a car charger and a finished basement and it stops being enough.
Upgrading means coordinating with ComEd, replacing the meter socket and mast, and sizing the new panel for what the building will need in ten years rather than exactly what it needs today.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
Start with a phone call. An electrician hears the details and tells you if it is an emergency or something to schedule.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Electrical service replacement, done on the record
On the record means a licensed electrician, real insurance, a permit when the village calls for one, and an inspector’s sign-off.
Electrical service replacement questions
Do you handle electrical service replacement in Des Plaines?
Yes. Electrical service replacement is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
Yes. Permit requirements change from one village to the next, so we check before we start, pull what is needed and stay through the inspection.
How soon can you start?
Urgent problems, same day. Everything else, usually within a few days of your call. If the village needs a permit before we start, the permit sets the date.
Are you licensed for this?
Yes. We carry an Illinois electrical contractor license and insurance, and you are welcome to ask for proof of both before any work starts.
What does it cost?
We price each job from what it actually needs, so we look before we name a number. The price is written down before work begins and only changes if the scope changes, and you hear about that before it happens.
