What electrical service installation involves
A service that was right in 1968 is undersized now. The work starts with finding out what is actually there. With electrical service installation, that means looking at the existing wiring, the panel capacity and whatever the last person left behind.
Where repair makes more sense than replacement, we repair. Swapping out equipment that still has years left in it is good business for a contractor and a bad deal for you.
Where this comes up
Services, switchgear, transformers and the distribution behind the meter. Most of these calls come from Des Plaines and the surrounding suburbs, but we take them anywhere in our service area.
It comes up most during a remodel. The walls are open, the old wiring is right there, and it is the cheapest moment the building will ever give you to fix what is behind them. Once the drywall is back, the same repair costs more.
How we do it
The electrician who quotes the job comes from the same crew that does it. We work to the current code, test every circuit before we leave and label the panel so the next person can read it.
Why this is worth doing properly
Electrical problems are slow. A loose termination can heat and cool thousands of times before it finally fails, and by then the damage is inside the box, the insulation and sometimes the framing around it. Proper work is about the long run: wire sized correctly for the load and every connection made the way the manufacturer and the code intend.
The cost of doing it right the first time is almost always lower than the cost of doing it twice. We would rather tell you the job is bigger than you hoped than come back in two years.
Scheduling and how long it takes
Same day for anything unsafe, like no power or a burning smell. A service upgrade starts as soon as the permit and ComEd allow, and most other work fits in within a few days.
We will tell you at the quote which parts we control and which parts we do not. A service upgrade waiting on a utility appointment is a different timeline from a panel swap we can do tomorrow.
What the permit actually buys you
A permit puts the work on the public record for the address. When the building changes hands, that record is evidence the electrical was done and checked. Without it, a buyer's inspector treats everything they find as suspect.
It also means the work was sized and installed to the code edition in force, not to whatever was normal when the building went up.
Materials and why they matter
Devices are not all the same. A fifty-cent backstabbed outlet holds the conductor with a spring clip; a commercial-grade one clamps it under a screw plate. The second kind is a couple of dollars more and it is the reason the connection is still tight in fifteen years.
We use commercial-grade devices as standard. It is a small share of the job cost and it is the part most likely to fail if you go cheap on it.
The warning signs people ignore
If you have started unplugging one thing to run another, the circuit is telling you it is overloaded. Same if a breaker trips in one season and never in the other. People work around these for years. We would rather see them early, while the fix is still a small one.
Getting used to it is the risk. A quirk you have lived with for a year is still a fault, only an older one.
Service size is a ceiling on everything
The service is the limit every other circuit lives under. A 100-amp service was generous when houses had one air conditioner and a gas range. Add electric cooking, a heat pump, a car charger and a finished basement and it stops being enough.
Upgrading means coordinating with ComEd, replacing the meter socket and mast, and sizing the new panel for what the building will need in ten years rather than exactly what it needs today.
We tell you what is wrong before we tell you what it costs.
How the job runs
- Step 1
Call
You describe the symptom to an electrician who has seen it before. Urgent or not, you know before you hang up.
- Step 2
Diagnose
We find the actual fault. Not a guess, and not a rewire you did not need.
- Step 3
Price
You get the number before the work starts, in writing.
- Step 4
Permit
Where the village requires one, we pull it. That is on us, not on you.
- Step 5
Install
Licensed and insured, to code, cleaned up behind us.
- Step 6
Inspect
We meet the inspector and we sign off. You get the documentation.

Electrical service installation, done on the record
Every job goes on the record. A permit filed where the village asks for one, an inspection passed, and a licensed, insured electrician doing the work.
Electrical service installation questions
Do you handle electrical service installation in Des Plaines?
Yes. Electrical service installation is work we do regularly out of our Des Plaines shop, and we cover 24 counties across Illinois. Call and we will tell you when we can be there.
Is the work permitted and inspected?
When a permit is required, we handle it from start to finish. The inspection is part of the job, and you keep the signed-off documentation for your records.
How soon can you start?
Scheduled work usually starts within a few days, slower only if a permit or a part is holding it up. Emergencies get seen the same day.
Are you licensed for this?
It is the first thing you should ask. The answer is yes: Quik Wire Electric holds an Illinois electrical contractor license and carries insurance on every job.
What does it cost?
We do not give a price over the phone for work we have not seen, because a number like that is a guess. Once we have looked, you get a written price, and that is the price unless the job itself changes.
